After having the straw curls for a week, I decided to just twist my hair again. Instead of doing the twists on stretched hair, I went back to twisting on damp hair. I also decided to not do them so small. I just didn't feel like doing a bajillion teenie tiny little twists. I used Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and castor oil.
Other than the expected shrinkage, my twists came out plump and juicy looking. I have no idea why I chose a middle part though...I'm not doing that again lol. I did these on Monday and I doubt I'll keep em longer than a week. I just gotta figure out what I wanna do next.

Straw Curls
I kept my mini twists in for two weeks. After I took those down I figured I could do a style that I've wanted to revisit for a while - Straw Curls!
The first time that I did straw curls the results were really good. I loved the definition of the springy coils and the style lasted a while. Lately I've been thinking about doing another set but I didn't want to get the same tight coils. I wanted looser, elongated curls. So I figured that I could just space my hair around the straws to get the look I wanted. So I washed and conditioned my hair then applied Cantu Shea Butter and olive oil and put my hair in about 10-12 twists. I used about 3-4 straws for each section. It only took me 2 1/2 hours and I used Shea Moisture Curl Milk, castor oil, and my pink Eco Styler gel. I didn't want crunchy curls so I went real light on the gel. I let it air dry overnight and this morning I took out the straws and separated each coil in 2-4 sections. I'm pretty pleased with the results even though there's only a slight difference in the outcome compared to last time.
This style will probably only last a week so of course I'm already thinking about what to do next. Hmmm...

6 Month Protective Style Challenge
The fact that my last relaxer was September 2008 and all I have is shoulder length hair pisses me off. I'm not gonna lie about that. I hate the fact that I have nothing to show for these past four years. I'm mostly pissed off with myself. But it is something that I need to let go. I know that I wasn't taking care of my hair like I should have and that is why things are the way they are. I know that I just said that I wouldn't worry about the length of my hair anymore. And that is true. That is not the point of this post. I just wanted to rant a bit and try to come to terms with the fact that I need to accept my hair. I need to accept the fact that my hair is thin and fine and that if you stare at it too hard, it'll break off smh. I need to accept that I am not gonna
wake up and miraculously have long, thick hair. I have to be patient with my progress and take my time. If I'm good to my hair and I leave it alone, my hair will grow.
From now until May I intend on only doing protective and low manipulation styles. I figure if I just leave my hair alone for days/weeks at a time, it will be easier for me to retain length and stop worrying about my hair progress so much. Also, this challenge goes perfect with the length check that I already set for May 2013.

Mini Twists
For the longest, I've been saying that I wanted to try mini twists again. After the TNC failure I didn't feel like having to deal with my hair so it only made sense. I decided to do them smaller than last time so it took me foreverrrr! lol. But I feel like it's worth it. I'll probably keep these in for a while because I really don't feel like being bothered. Plus, my hair just needs to chill for a bit. Since my hair was overdue for a trim, I decided to kill two birds with one stone. I snipped my ends twist by twist. My hair being perfectly even isn't much of a concern because I don't ever wear my hair straight. I knew my hair needed a bit of loving so I used Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque as a leave in. I know that I recently swore off the thought of twists but ehh, they came out better and fuller this time. So my mind has been changed lol.
Random...
Sometimes I get so caught up in the fact that my hair isn't where I'd like it to be, I forget about my journey. Yeah I've had a couple of screw ups and I've made some mistakes, but I've come to a place of acceptance. I'm not gonna make a fuss about the length of my hair because I can't change that overnight. If I focus more on the health of my hair, the length will come. Duh.
My first set of twists from August 2009:
My latest:
An entire 3 years later.
No I don't have the length I want but so what? I know better now. So I'll do better.

Twist N Curl FAIL!
So as I was sitting with my deep conditioner in my hair, I remembered a video that I saw that I could not get out of my head. I've seen a gazillion Twist N Curl's before but I fell in love with hers. Take a gander...
Isn't her hair just so damn gorgeous? I obviously don't have as much hair as her so I was a bit hesitant to try it out. But I figured the definition would be great.
I tried a variation of what she did. I flat twisted the front like she did but I did not do so many individual twists. And I also twisted my hair to the ends. I used Cantu Shea Butter Creamy Hair Lotion, castor oil, and my pink EcoStyler gel. I only ended up with 15 twists because I only had 14 perm rods. I had to improvise and add one of my small rollers in the back when I ran out of rods.
When I took down my hair the next day, I figured it would be cute. That night I pincurled the ends and went to sleep. The next afternoon I started getting ready to go hang out with my friends. Somehow, I lost track of time and ended up rushing to get dressed. I didn't think I would need much time to do my hair so I wasn't panicked or anything. After I got dressed, I took down my hair and was faced with complete disappointment. My hair looked a hot damn mess! My curls were all janky looking and sooo not cute. It was horrible. I played with my hair a bit then I decided I didn't want to wear it down. So I tried to pin it up. That was a fail. Then I decided to do a puff. That was too corny. Then I figured I could just put it in a bun. That wasn't neat enough. So I settled on a messy bun.
Ehh, cute enough right?
I was happy that I didn't use my "bun enhancer" and it came out pretty decent. As far as the twist n curl, maybe I could try it again. Eventually...

Hair Neglect
I just got back to Brooklyn after an impromptu "vacation" in New Paltz. I had planned on staying for 3 days and ended up staying 8. Craziness. So while I was there, I had a great experience and I really enjoyed myself. I wish I could say the same about my hair.
I spent an entire week neglecting my hair. I wore the three strand twist out week until it looked old, which was 3 days into my trip. It coulda lasted longer but I decided that I wanted a big fro. So I combed out my curls with my fingers and braided up my hair. I did this for two days until I decided it was too much work lol. So I wore a big puff for the rest of the week. Did I wash my hair? No. Did I restyle my hair? No. So I basically had a huge, undefined puff that I was showing noooo love to. My poor hair. Smh. When I got home I detangled my hair with some conditioner, washed it and did a much needed DC. Now I'm trying to decide what I wanna do next. For the longest I've been saying that I wanna try mini twists again. Maybe that's my next move. Or maybe I'll do some flat twists. We'll see...

More Goals...
Lately all I've been talking about is my hair. So I thought I would write about something else for a change. Then I drew a blank. Exactly what can I talk about? Feeling inadequate because I don't have an income. Feeling trapped inside of a body that I don't even recognize anymore. Feeling too scared to make the necessary changes that I am certain need to be made. Feeling alone. Misunderstood. Confused.
I've neglected to talk about anything other than my hair for the past 5 months because I didn't want to have to face it. I didn't want anyone to know what was going on with me. I don't go out. I don't reach out to my friends. I don't interact with the outside world much, if at all.
I didn't have a set plan for after graduation. I knew that it would take time for me to find a job and get in the swing of things. But damn. I feel stuck. I've made no progress in any area of my life. WTF?
I can't let my life pass me by like this. I'm wasting away. On a daily basis I'm just sitting here, wasting away.
I need to take control of my life. My finances. My social life. My health. My well-being. Because right now, I'm feeling broken. And the only way for me to be fixed is for me to take accountability for allowing myself into this situation. The next step is action. Sitting around talking about what's wrong with my life doesn't fix shit. It just doesn't.
Game Plan
1. Get a fucking job. Somewhere. I absolutely loathe the idea of having a retail job. I always have. No, it's not because I feel like I'm above that kind of job. I just know that it's not for me. However, I'm broke as shit. I've been out of school for 5 months. I need some kind of income. I'm just gonna have to suck it up and get a random job while I'm still looking.
2. Get control of my health. I need to lose weight for my health and to feel better in my skin. I must have said this a million times. But its so damn true. And it's more than just my weight. I feel unhealthy. I just don't feel good...ever smh.
3. Start writing again. I haven't written anything in a long time. Longggggg time smh. This just isn't cool.
4. Pick up a fucking book. I always joke and say that college took away my joy of reading. But that's bullshit. If I can get my hands on a good book, I'd be happy as hell. It would also be a nice way to escape from my own damn mind for a while.
5. Sing. Just because it feels good. Who cares if I sound good if I'm doing it for me? I shouldn't be scared to sing in private smh.
6. Stop being a recluse. I barely ever leave my house. Usually during the summer or during a break I'll end up sitting in the house all the time. ....I'm not on a break. There is no busy life to go back to at New Paltz. I need to have a life here. And now. Right fucking now.
How many times have I written a list like this? Who knows. All I know is that shit needs to change. Seriously.

Hair Health Goals
I now know that my hair needs extra love and care because of just how fragile it is. When I don't treat my hair well, it shows. In 2011, I lost a lot of inches from neglect. I also had a lot of breakage due to a horrible experience with weave that I'll come back and talk about later. Anyway, here's a couple of things I look forward to:
Achieving Bra Strap Length by May 2013
Doing more protective styles
Trying new products
Trying new styles (flexi-rod set, flat twist updos, pin up styles, etc.)
Hair is definitely not my only focus right now. There are so many other things that I can be focused on other than my hair. And I'm fully aware of that. Part II coming soon...

Three Strand Twistout
I said that I was going to try straw curls on my straight crochets but I kinda lost interest in the hair. So after 2 weeks of being tucked away, my hair is out and free. I just missed it too much.
Over the past couple of weeks I have seen a few bloggers talk about 3 strand twist outs. I first read about it on AfroniquelyYou, then on Hairscapades. So after I took out my crochet braids, I decided that I would try it out. After watching this tutorial, I practiced and I was surprised at how easy it was and how quick I picked it up. I did about 25 twists using Cantu Shea Butter Creamy Hair Lotion, castor oil, and my pink EcoStyler gel. I kept my hair in twists for two days then I took them down to these results:
As usual with twistouts, there was shrinkage, but the definition was worth it. I honestly don't see a major difference between two strand twists and three strand twists. The outcome was basically the same. The only difference was that my curls had a bit of wave to them instead of perfect cylinders. I'm not all that into twistouts anymore but I would definitely try it again, especially since it was so damn simple.

Straight Crochet Braids - Bantu Knot Out
Out of boredom, one night I started doing bantu knots in the back of my head. It was tedious as hell because I couldn't do them too big or they would unravel. So I only ended up doing the back of my head and went to bed. A day later, I took one down to see how it would look. Since it was cute, I decided to continue. I only ended up doing half of the front of my head before I gave up. Then the next night, I finally finished my head. Somehow I managed to drag it out for four days lol. This morning I unraveled my hair and I was pleased to see a nice wave/curl pattern :)
I'm really liking this look. Plus I feel more like myself with curly hair :)

Crochet Braids Pt. 6: Straight Hair
Yes, you read that correctly - straight hair.
It's been about eight months since the last time I decided to get crochets and this time I decided to switch it up a bit. I've been thinking about doing it with straight hair for a while now but I wasn't sure if it was something I really wanted to do. Since I don't feel like having to deal with my hair right now, I felt like crochets would be my best bet. I know that the last time I did crochets, it was such an epic fail that I swore off any hair that wasn't tightly curled. Well, I lied lol. Lately I've been thinking about wearing a short bob and you know I refuse to cut or straighten my own hair. So a straight crochet install it is.
I will admit that I was skeptical when I first saw that people were using kanekalon hair for crochets. But after stalking some YouTube videos, I decided it wouldn't be that bad. Here's a tutorial:
The idea of using cheap 3 for $5 braiding hair probably sounds crazy as hell but I don't see anything wrong with it. It's economical and the texture is similar to my blow dried hair. Plus, after a quick blow dry, the hair feels and looks pretty damn presentable.
My sister already had one pack in the house so we just cut that pack in quarters and she went to work. I was going for a short look but what we ended up with just was not cute. NOT CUTE! So we took it out, I ran to the store to get more hair and we started all over.
Finished product:
After the blowout:
Comparison pic:
I think it came out pretty decent but I haven't had straight hair in so long that it just feels awkward. Also, after the blowout the hair looked extra straight and shiny, which I don't like all that much. So I decided to braid it to give it a bit more texture.
Braidout:
It came out alright but it still looks shiny as hell. Since I'm not used to straight hair, I think I just might do a straw set to get a more curly look. Updates soon :)

Twistout Revisited
After having that gel in my hair for a few days, I knew it was time for something else. So I washed and conditioned my hair then sat on my bed for about 5 minutes. I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with my hair. I know I said that I was done with twistouts, but out of boredom, I decided to twist my hair. So I picked up my free sample packet of Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding and ended up with 20 something twists. The next day I took down my twists and was reminded of why I used to love twistouts so much. The definition was great. It looked and felt nice. It also looked short as hell. Like, ridiculously short. But cute lol.

Eco Styler Braidout
My hair was long overdue for a wash after I took down that bun. So after I washed my hair and did a much needed deep conditioning, I decided to try something different. Usually when I braid my hair, I use a leave-in and an oil and call it a day. But I wanted to see how my hair would come out if I also used gel. So I put some Shea Moisture Curl Milk on my damp hair and used the pink Eco Styler gel with castor and olive oil as I braided it up. As usual, I only did about 10 braids. The braids stayed in for 3 days then I took them out.
It came out nice and shiny, feeling moisturized and looking very defined.
But I didn't like it that much :/
It seems as though when I have the most definition, I have the least amount of body. This is probably why I've enjoyed styling my hair dry a lot more lately. I guess I just prefer the fluff over the definition.

Stretched Hair Fun
Here's a couple of styles that were a result of my blowout last week.
Bantu knot out from about 30 twists:
Bantu knot out from about 10 braids:
My second ever high bun. My first was last year.
Ok. It wasn't exactly a high bun. It started out high and ended up lower than expected.
It still came out cute though. Even though I thought I looked like a librarian. I've never been all that interested in buns or ponytails because I'd much rather wear my hair down. I'll try it again though, in a non-gradma way of course.
Oh yeah, I soooo cheated to make my bun. I have the length but no body. I probably could've made a bun without any help but I'm sure it looks waayyy better with my homemade bun enhancer.
Who knew how handy an old pair of tights could be? lol

Big Hair...I Guess
I don't like when people tell me that my hair is long or try to point out how much it has grown. As a matter of fact, that is my least favorite compliment to receive. And that is for two reasons:
1) Hair grows. That is what it is supposed to do. So telling someone that you've noticed growth isn't really a compliment. It is simply making an observation. Also, when I was younger and people would exclaim how long my hair was, I felt like what they really meant to say was that my hair was long for a Black girl. It is a quite widely accepted sentiment that Black women's hair just doesn't grow. This is simply not true. It's just that we do so much harm to our hair and neglect to take care of it properly, that many women simply don't retain any length. When my hair was relaxed, it would grow really long, then I would eventually end up cutting off my raggedy ass ends. It was a cycle that I went through quite a few times.
Example:
That cycle that I had has continued into my natural hair journey and leads right into reason#2...
2) I am unhappy with the progress of my hair. While I can see obvious growth, I know that my hair is not where I'd like it to be. Of course my hair is growing, its just a matter of me keeping my length. Unfortunately, I haven't been the best at doing that.
Last night I did a roller set, just like last time. Then earlier today I blow dried my hair. And I gotta say, I lovesss me some big ass hair! lol
My blowout today:
My last blowout July 2011:
I can clearly see the growth but I don't like the fact that after 3 years, my hair has not made it past slightly longer than shoulder length. As a matter of fact, I think my hair is shorter now than a few months ago.
My hair in February:
See what I mean?
However, I know what the problem is. While away at school I was not taking good care of my hair. So whenever I came home for a break I would have the need to "trim" my ends. Buttttt I'd always end up cutting my hair, taking away any progress I've made with length. Simply because of my negligence. My hair is fragile as hell so it takes a bit of extra care, which I wasn't giving it. I know that I can't expect my hair to magically get longer overnight and I need to commit myself to improving its health (along with my overall health/well-being, but that's a discussion for another time lol).
1) Hair grows. That is what it is supposed to do. So telling someone that you've noticed growth isn't really a compliment. It is simply making an observation. Pillow Soft Curls
Since I've been natural, I've heard tons of things about Miss Jessie's products. Some people hate them, some swear by them. Forty dollars for a jar of something for my hair just did not seem right and never fit into my budget so I never tried any of their products.
A few weeks ago I saw that Miss Jessie's had a new product called Pillow Soft Curls. I was immediately intrigued because I have yet to find a product that works well for my Wash & Goes. Since I wasn't planning on buying the product, I just added it to the list of things I'd like to eventually try. About a week later, I came across a site that compiles a bunch of places that offer free samples. I was immediately excited when I came across Miss Jessie's on this site. So I took advantage of their free samples and ordered the Pillow Soft Curls, Curly Pudding and Curly Meringue.
When I received the samples, I still had the mini twists in, which I ended up keeping in for 2 weeks. When I finally washed my hair, I figured it made perfect sense to try out some of my new stuff. So after washing and conditioning my hair I did like the directions said and raked the product through my hair. I used the product alone, just to see how it acts on its own. It felt ok in my hair and I felt like my curls would be sexy. About an hour later, I wanted to see how my hair was drying and saw a bunch of white spots. Grrrrr I hate when that happens. My sister suggested putting some olive oil in my hair and that did the trick. My curls were just popping all over the place and my hair dried soft with a little shine to it. Anddd every time I turned my head or the wind blew I got a whiff of a fabric softener scent. Yumm :)
As soon as I was done with my hair, I was out and about and didn't get a chance to snap a pic. Then that night I made a last minute decision to go out, so in my rush of getting ready I still didn't have a chance to take a pic. I wish I had a picture to share :(
The next day I ran to the store and randomly took a picture. Yes, I'm in my elevator...don't judge me!
Yup. That was my first time wearing a New Paltz shirt outside as an alumna. I felt old lmaoo. Anyway, I hope you can see my sexy curls popping all over the place.
The next day I wet my hair in the shower to refresh my curls and headed to the beach with my family.
There's a possibility that I might want to try this product again in the future, but we'll just have to see.
Oh yeah, go get your Miss Jessie's free samples!!! They are only allowing 2 now, but hey, who doesn't like free stuff?

Day 30- A song that you haven’t listened to in a while
Stevie Wonder's "Love's in Need of Love Today" from Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
August 24, 2012
Day 29- A song currently stuck in your head
Rochelle Jordan's "Shotgun" from P R E S S U R E (2012)
I seriously cannot stop playing this song. Last Tuesday she released P R E S S U R E and I have been playing it nonstop since then. I've already mentioned how much I love Rochelle Jordan. It's like I can't get enough of her. Anyway, you should definitely go check it out for yourself here. And while you're at it, check out last year's R O J O.

Day 28 - A song that reminds you of your boyfriend/girlfriend (if you don’t have one, make one up :])
I don't have a boyfriend and I refuse to make one up for this. So I'll just post the first song that comes to mind.

Day 27 - A song you make fun of
Kiely William's "Spectacular" (2010)
When I first saw this video, I was a bit shocked and confused. Although I thought the idea was irresponsible, I couldn't help but laugh at the ridiculousness of the song and video. Since then, I've heard her reasoning and explanation and although I understand what she was trying to do, it just didn't work.
Here's the message she wrote under the video:

ATTENTION: I am an actress and performer. I have been so since my first
role in a television pilot at five years old. I played a character
when I was a Cheetah Girl. I am playing a character in the music video
for the song Spectacular, as I did in the Cheetah Girl movies.
The fact is, that sometimes women get intoxicated and have unprotected sex. My video puts this issue front and center. It is absurd to infer or suggest that I am condoning this behavior. Are Lady Gaga and Beyonce advocating murder with the Telephone video? Of, course not. Was Rihanna encouraging suicide with Russian Roulette? No. Was Madonna suggesting that young unmarried girls get pregnant with Papa Don't Preach? I don't think so. Is Academy Award winner Monique a proponent of incest because of her portrayal of Mary in the movie Precious. Clearly, the answer is no.
I wrote Spectacular and made the video to bring attention to a serious women's health and safety issue. Don't shoot the messenger.

Day 26 - A song by your favorite band
I don't have a favorite band because there are tonsss of groups that I have loved over the years. So I guess I'll just go with the first thing that comes to mind.
I used to be crazy about Jagged Edge so here's one of my favorites from them:
Jagged Edge's "The Rest of Our Lives" from A Jagged Era (1997)

Day 23 - A song that makes you angry
I absolutely hate it when people make songs over that don't need to be made over. When I heard that The Dream was making over Aaliyah's "One in a Million," I cringed just at the thought of hearing it. But I took myself over to YouTube just to see if I was just overreacting. After listening, I knew I was right. He didn't have ANY business making her song over. AT ALL. He shoulda just left it alone. Then I heard that Omarion made it over too and I was just like WHAT??? But after listening, I actually prefer his over The Dream's. Go figure.

Mini Twists
I used to constantly wear mini twists for the first 2 years of my natural hair journey. It was simple. I'd wash my hair, twist it up, wear the twists for most of the week, then wear a twistout for a few days and start the process all over again. Once I gained some length I started wearing more puffs and out styles. It has been well over a year since the last time I had mini twists.
I used to only twist on wet hair but this time around, I wanted to do it on stretched hair. So Monday I washed & conditioned my hair then braided it up with Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. The next day I took out each braid, finger combed my hair then braided it back up. Yesterday I twisted my hair with some olive oil and Organic Root Stimulator Lock and Twist Gel. I like this gel because its not too sticky, it doesn't leave my hair hard and my twists are smooth and shiny with minimal frizz. After I take down these twists I'm gonna see how this gel will work for a braidout. Anyway, here's a couple of pics of my twists:
My hair is pretty fine and there is low density of my strands. So when I twist my hair, it looks like I don't have much hair. Luckily I have enough hair so that my twists aren't scalpy. However, I still don't have enough volume to make my twists look, ummm cute lol. It's a convenient style and if I do it again it will be to take a break from my hair. But just for style reasons? Umm no. Maybe when my hair is longer. Maybe.

Day 21 - A song you want to dance to at your wedding
I'm gonna take the classic route (or corny, depending on how you feel) and go with the electric slide! Of course I coulda chose a cheesy slow love song because there are tonssss of those. But when I picture my wedding I picture my family blended with his family all excited, laughing and joking, dancing together on the dance floor. Plus, what's a Black wedding without the Electric Slide??? lol
Marcia Griffiths' "Electric Boogie" from Carousel (1990)
Sooo am I the only dodo that didn't know this song was sang by a big deal, hugely famous Jamaican Reggae artist? Please tell me I'm not the only one. Oh, I am? *hangs head in shame and slowly walks away*
Oh and also I'll add my favorite group dance everrrr! The Cha Cha Slide oh yeahh !
Mr. C The Slide Man's "Cha-Cha Slide" from Cha-Cha Slide: The Original Slide Album (2000)
If you know me you know my favorite parts are "hands on your knees" and "how low can you go." Oh best believe I will be breaking it down at my wedding hahaha

Day 20 - A song from a new album you are waiting for to come out
Dwele's "What Profit" from Greater Than One, which will be released August 28, 2012
To put it simply, I LOVE Dwele! I love his mellow, smooth style. I love the fact that he writes beautiful and clever lyrics, produces his own stuff and that he plays so many damn instruments lol. I have all 4 of his previous albums and I am really looking forward to hearing his new stuff :)

Braidout Pt2
Last week, after I wore my great braidout, I decided to try a twistout. So I twisted my hair with Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie thinking that I could have decent definition from a dry twistout. Well I was wrong, dead wrong lol. After I twisted my hair, I took one down a few hours later and there was not one wave, curl, nothing. So I swapped my twists for braids and this is how it looked the next day:
This only adds to my love of braidouts. Yeah, I think twistouts have ran their course with my hair.

Day 19 - A song you’re currently obsessed with
There are numerous songs that I have had obsessive moments with - songs that I've had to listen to at least 5 times every time I played them. Usually there's always one song that I can't get out of my head. But right now, I don't have one soooo I'll pick a random song that I love.
Joss Stone's "Proper Nice" from Introducing Joss Stone (2007)
I absolutely love this entire album from beginning to end. It's definitely one of my faves.

I haven't had a ringtone in two years. I'm not the least bit interested in having one now. Soooo here's a song that I love so much that I could stand to hear it every time my phone rings.

Day 15 - A song people wouldn’t expect you to like
One day I had my MP3 player on random and a Kelly Clarkson song came on. My friend was a bit taken aback and said he couldn't picture me walking to class with this music playing in my ears. I was a bit offended because while I make it very clear that I love Soul/R&B/Neo-Soul music, that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy other genres. Now I'll admit, most of the non-black artists I listen to have some soul. I love Joss Stone, JoJo, Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke. And when I was younger I used to love me some 'NSync, Jessica Simpson, Pink and Kelly Clarkson. Shit, I still do lol.
Kelly Clarkson's "Behind These Hazel Eyes" from Breakaway (2004)
Braidout!
After I washed and conditioned my hair, I applied Tresemme Flawless Curls Lotion Creme, aloe vera gel and Nature's Blessings Hair Pomade. I usually do about 10 braids but I felt like doing them smaller so I ended up with 24. I was a bit skeptical and scared that my hair would come out flat. But it came out great! I love the combination of the products, the definition and shine, and the fact that I had some body.
Random back story to the Tresemme's lotion. My old suitemate left her bottle when she moved out in 2010. I brought it home, thinking that I would return it to her when I saw her. Since then she's been to my house, I've been to her house and we've met up quite a few times. Out of all these chances to return it, I never remembered to return it. A few weeks ago, I saw it on my dresser and was like "heeeyyyy, I should try this product out! I mean, she's got to have replaced it since then, right?" So first I did a wash and go but I didn't use gel so it didn't hold up as well as I'm used to. I do like the product though.

Day 14 - A song you like hearing live
ANYTHING by Raheem DeVaughn!!! OMG that man is a beast live! I've been to three of his shows since 2007 and whenever he performs in NYC, I try to go see him. He knows how to give a good show and you always get your money's worth. Also, I love the fact that he has his homie Demont Peekaso on stage
creating art as he's singing. It gives the show a great feel and a little something extra.
Raheem DeVaughn's "Ask Yourself" from The Love Experience (2005)
I recorded this video 3/10/08 at B.B. King's
My absolute favorite part of this performance is when everyone on stage drops and the music stops. When the song starts back up again....mmmmm :)

Every time I hear this song I think about the time when me and my bestie sang this as a duet. We sounded...umm...yeah...lol
Brandy's "Best Friend" from Brandy (1994)
I can't hear this song without thinking of my sister. Everything that Brandy is saying about her brother Ray J in this song, I can relate to. I love my sister and whenever I hear this song I dedicate it to her.

Day 8 - A song you liked when you were younger
This is a tough one for me.
I grew up in the 90s and that is my favorite decade for music. There are tonssss and tonssss of songs I liked when I was younger. I loved listening to the radio, playing my cassettes and watching Video Music Box. Since I can remember, I've always been in love with music. Me and my sister would record songs off the radio, sing along, and make up dance steps. Since there is so much 90s music to choose from, I'm just not going to choose a song from that decade lol
When I was around 7, I don't know what program I was watching but one day this video came on...
...and I fell in love. Soon after, my love of sexual songs began smh. Since then, this has always been one of my favorite songs.
Here's a longer unedited version:
Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" from Juicy Fruit (1982)
Of course this song has been sampled numerous times. No offense to Biggie or Keyshia Cole, but the original will always be my favorite.

Day 7 - A song that is your guilty pleasure
Ok, I'm just gonna say it...I love Turquoise Jeep! Last year, somehow I ended up watching "Fried or Fertilized" and I sat and watched all of their videos. Then I showed all my friends. We sang and danced along like a bunch of fools but I didn't care cuz it was fun. That's pretty harmless right? The guilty pleasure part of it is that I downloaded most of their songs and put them on my MP3 player. I get a little bit of joy if I'm walking to the store and "Lemme Smang It" comes on. These songs/videos me laugh and I just find their randomness hilarious lol.
So here are a few of my "guilty pleasures" from Turquoise Jeep:
Turquoise Jeep Records: Keep The Jeep Ridin' (2010)
"Why I Gotta Wait??" (Single 2011) by Flynt Flossy ft. Yung Humma
Yes this is a bunch of craziness. But I love it lol
Go check out their other videos. You know you want to.

Day 4 - A song that reminds you of something sad
Heatwave's "Always and Forever" from Too Hot to Handle (1976)
Here's a live version:
During the end of my father's fight with lung cancer, he had a stroke and lost most of his capabilities. He couldn't walk, feed himself, or use the bathroom without assistance. And his speech had become hard to understand. On top of that, he had become grumpy and mean. He wasn't himself. But one day he sang along with the radio and smiled. It was to this song. I wasn't in the room at the time but just hearing that he was happy for a few minutes made me happy. Within a week of his stroke, my father had passed away. Although this song signified a happy moment while he was still living, after his death, it just stood as a reminder. It was difficult for me to listen to this song for a few years. Every time that I heard just a few seconds of this song, I would burst into tears. It doesn't happen every time I hear the song now, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't catch me sometimes. "Always and Forever" is truly a beautiful song and now instead of crying when I hear it, I dedicate it to the love I have for my father.
I'll always love you forever, forever...

Day 3 - A song that makes you laugh
I couldn't think of any songs that made me laugh. I thought pretty hard and nothing came to mind. And I'm certain that there are songs that I like that I bust out laughing every time I hear them. But I just couldn't remember any :(
So instead here's a couple of songs that made me giggle when I first heard them. I was pretty young when I heard these songs so their concepts were a bit strange to me. 10 years later and I no longer giggle lol
Missy Elliott's "Toyz" from This Is Not a Test! (2003)
Kandi's "I Won't Bite My Tongue" from Hey Kandi (2000)
Mýa's "Sophisticated Lady" Moodring (2003)

Next To Me
I can't get this song out of my head! Her voice is beautiful, the lyrics are great and I'm just in love with the overall feel of the song. This song has been out for a while but recently it has just stuck with me.
Check it out :)

Hair Update
Last week I finally clipped my ends. It was long overdue. I flat twisted my hair and did bantu knots with the ends. I just used olive oil and the pink Eco Styler gel. Since I didn't go anywhere, I kept my hair twisted for a few days. When I took my hair down, it was very curly and defined but I didn't like the way it looked. So I tried to do an updo. I played with my hair in the mirror for a while and this is what I came up with:
I received a small bag of Taliah Waajid samples monthsssss ago. I used the Curl Cream as soon as I got it and was unimpressed. My hair looked nice but felt horrible...kinda like straw smh. So I was uninspired to try the rest of the stuff in the sample package. Last week, out of boredom, I decided to use the Easy Herbal Comb Out, which is a part of the children's haircare line. I washed & conditioned my hair, towel dried it and raked the product through my hair. I used aloe vera gel with castor oil to seal and I braided my hair in the usual 10 braids. It came out soft, defined, shiny and sexy.
That night I braided my hair again, without adding anything. And it came out just as nice the next day.
